slow day at CBS News

They must be having a bit of trouble populating the CBS news website with all the layoffs and cutbacks, since that august organization is running with this story (picked up by Drudgereport):

image5076108xIsraeli TV newscasters Tuesday night interpreted a photo taken Monday in the Oval Office of President Obama talking on the phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an “insult” to Israel.

They saw the incident as somewhat akin to an incident last year, when the Iraqi reporter threw a shoe at President Bush in Baghdad.

Of course, there are no sources in the report, no quotes from actual Israelis about how ‘insulted’ they are – not even a single comment from, say, an Israeli Arab on a website who might (but probably not) feel aggrieved toward the wildly popular Obama.

CBS basically shrugged its shoulders and admitted they made up this story with this lame excuse:

It is considered an insult in the Arab world to show the sole of your shoe to someone. It is not a Jewish custom necessarily, but Israel feels enough a part of the Middle East after 60 years to be insulted too.

Maybe the Israelis feel so much part of the Middle East nowadays that they might start banning the Israeli national soccer team from playing locally, obliging them to just play in, say, in the South Pacific.
