The “bunch of guys” theory of terrorism at work again

Today’s NYT’s article about a group of young Somali men leaving Minneapolis for jihad in Somalia reminded me of Marc Sageman’s “bunch of guys” or “group of guys” theory, discussed in his book Leaderless Jihad:  that most terrorists more or less group up within the same neighborhood/kinship cluster of each other.
Of course, some say that the BOG theory doesn’t hold water…but I’d like to see a better model to describe this phenomena.
